How a silent disco works from a guest's point of view

Quick answer

Guests pop on wireless headphones, flick a small switch to pick from three music channels, and the headphones glow a colour showing which channel they're on. Everyone sets their own volume, can lift the headphones off to chat, and can switch channels as often as they like.

If you've never been to a silent disco, it can sound a bit strange at first — a whole room dancing away with headphones on? But once you're there, the experience turns out to be simple, sociable and a lot of fun, which is why so many first-timers come away converted.

Arriving and picking up your headphones

On arrival, guests collect a pair of wireless headphones from a table or a member of staff. Every pair is charged, padded and adjustable. We show guests how to fit them and where to find the controls.

Some hosts hand out a small card explaining what's on each of the three channels. This is a nice touch at weddings and charity events where a lot of guests will be trying silent disco for the first time.

Getting to know the headphones

Our LED headphones are light, comfortable over several hours, and simple to operate. Each pair has:

  • A power button to switch them on.
  • A channel switch to move between the three music channels.
  • A volume wheel so guests control how loud it plays.
  • LED lights that glow red, blue or green depending on the active channel.

Those lights aren't purely decorative — they let everyone see which channel is proving the most popular. When a big tune drops on one channel, you'll often see the whole room switch colour together.

Top tip

If a guest says they can't hear anything, check the volume wheel and the power button first — that solves the vast majority of "no sound" moments before you need to think about a technical fault.

Picking a channel

Guests flick between channels until they land on music they like. Most people sample all three within the first few minutes before settling on a favourite. If a song comes on they're not keen on, they simply switch — no need to slip off the dancefloor awkwardly.

This is what makes silent disco such a social format. Three groups can be dancing to three completely different songs while sharing the same room and the same energy. Expect people pointing at each other's headphone colours and swapping channels to dance together.

Volume and comfort

Every guest sets their own volume — a real bonus for mixed-age events, where older guests can keep it gentle while younger guests crank it up. Anyone wanting a chat can just slide the headphones off or down around their neck. The music exists only for the person wearing them.

Good to know

For children's events, our headphones are volume-limited, so the level stays safe even at full wheel. Adult events get the full volume range.

The social side of it

Silent disco creates a genuinely different social atmosphere. Without a wall of speaker noise, people can chat without stepping off the dancefloor. Friends compare channels. Strangers bond over discovering they're on the same song. And watching a whole room silently belting out lyrics never stops being funny.

For the host, this takes the pressure off any one playlist — guests entertain themselves flicking between channels, backing "their" crowd, and swapping sides mid-song.

What guests need to bring

Practically nothing. There's no need for guests to bring their own headphones, apps or phones. A few things do help:

  • Comfortable shoes — it's still a proper dancefloor.
  • A hair tie for anyone with elaborate hair, since the headphone band can shift an updo.
  • A sense of humour — silent discos are best enjoyed by embracing how silly they look.

Handing headphones back

At the end of the night, guests return their headphones to the collection point. We count them back in, check for any issues, and pack them away. If you've booked an on-site operator, they take care of this for you.
