School silent disco planning guide — for teachers and PTAs

Silent discos have become standard practice at schools across Devon, for two very practical reasons: they don't disturb classes next door, and volume is controlled by each pupil, so there's no argument about "is the music too loud for this age group?". This guide covers what teachers and PTAs need to have sorted before they enquire.

Which school events silent disco suits

• End-of-term discos (KS1, KS2, KS3 and KS4).
• Year 6 leavers' parties.
• Sixth-form socials and Christmas events.

• Reward events for whole classes or year groups.

Sizing — the whole-school mistake

The classic sizing error is: "we've got 240 pupils, so we need 240 headphones." You don't. You need enough for the largest single group in the hall at any one time. Running KS1 in the morning and KS2 in the afternoon? Size for whichever key stage is bigger.

Typical Devon primary rotation:

• 50-pack — one class at a time, or Year 6 leavers.
• 100-pack — whole key stage (KS1 or KS2) in one session.
• 150-pack — whole primary school in a single hall.

Risk assessment — what to cover

Most schools fit silent disco kit under the standard "hall event" risk assessment. Specific points worth noting:

• PAT testing — all our kit is PAT tested annually; certificates available on request.
• Public liability insurance — we're covered to £5m and can send our current certificate for your file.
• Trip hazards — one power cable running to the transmitter, gaffer-taped down if it crosses a walkway (we bring the tape).
• Volume safety — each pupil controls their own headphone volume, and maximum output is capped below the WHO's recommended safe listening level for children.
• Hygiene — every headphone is wiped and sanitised between hires, with wipes provided on the day for teacher use if needed.

Running rotations across multiple year groups

A typical Devon primary format for a whole-school Christmas disco:

1. 9:30–10:15 — Reception & KS1 session.
2. 10:15–10:30 — Changeover, headphone wipe, quick charge check.
3. 10:30–11:30 — Lower KS2 session.
4. 11:30–11:45 — Changeover.
5. 11:45–12:45 — Upper KS2 session.

This all runs comfortably on a single 100-pack. Let us know your rotation plan when you book and we'll deliver early enough for a morning setup.

Planning the music

Most schools use a class Spotify playlist or a teacher's Apple Music library. We'd suggest three ready-made playlists — chart hits (clean radio edits), Disney / movie soundtracks, and a "silly songs" playlist. If your school runs a music filter policy, check each playlist for language ahead of time.

For sixth-form events and proms, put a student committee in charge of the playlists — they'll approach it far more seriously than a teacher would, and the results are usually better for it.

Booking timeline

• End-of-term events — book at least 4 weeks ahead; the last week of term fills quickly.
• Christmas discos — book by mid-October.
• Summer proms — book by February for the best choice of dates.
