Fixing common silent disco problems on the night

Quick answer

Most silent disco hiccups come down to three checks: is the headphone charged and switched on, is the volume turned up, and does the transmitter have power and a clear line of sight to the dancefloor. If a whole channel is silent, check the audio cable between the music source and the transmitter first.

Silent disco kit is dependable, but like any tech it can occasionally play up on the night. Most problems have a quick fix — here are the ones we see most often, and how to sort them fast.

A headphone won't switch on

  1. Hold the power button for 2–3 seconds — a quick tap sometimes isn't enough.
  2. Check it was charged. Pop it on the charging station for 10 minutes and try again.
  3. Grab a spare from the pile instead.

If several headphones won't turn on at once, the fault is more likely the charging setup than the headphones themselves. Check the charging station is plugged in and powered.

No sound in one or both ear cups

  1. Check the volume wheel is turned up.
  2. Confirm the headphone's on the right channel — the LED colour should match the active transmitter.
  3. Try flicking through the channels and back again.
  4. Gently wiggle the headphone band to check for a loose connection.

Still no joy? Swap in a spare and set the faulty one aside. Don't try to repair headphones mid-event.

Top tip

Keep a labelled "faulty" box or corner for problem headphones. It stops them being handed out again by mistake and makes the end-of-night check much quicker.

An entire channel has no sound

This is nearly always down to the cable or the music source, not the headphones. Work through this order:

  1. Is the music actually playing? Check the phone, laptop or tablet isn't paused or muted.
  2. Is the audio cable properly plugged in at both ends?
  3. Is the cable in the correct input on the transmitter?
  4. Swap in a different cable if you've got a spare.

Crackling or patchy sound

Crackling usually points to range or interference. Try these:

  • Move closer to the transmitter — walls, crowds and metal objects can shorten the range.
  • Make sure the transmitter isn't tucked behind a speaker, table or wall.
  • Check for other wireless devices nearby that could be causing interference.
  • Swap the headphone battery if it's running low — weak batteries can cause dropouts.

Weak range or dropping out

Most transmitters cover a large hall or garden without issue, but range suffers once the signal has to fight through obstacles. For the best coverage:

  • Position the transmitter up high and central to the dancing area where possible.
  • Avoid the floor or spots behind metal equipment.
  • Outdoors, keep the transmitter covered and away from rain.
  • Don't pile spare headphones or metal gear directly on or around the transmitter.
Good to know

Book an on-site operator with No Noise and they'll handle all of this for you. Self-hire bookings come with a printed troubleshooting card and phone support throughout your event.

Headphones not charging

  1. Check the charging station is plugged in and its power light is on.
  2. Make sure headphones are seated correctly in the charging slots.
  3. Look for a charging indicator light on the headphone itself.
  4. Try a different charging slot or power socket.

If a headphone won't hold charge at all, pull it from service and grab a spare. This is why we always suggest hiring 10% more headphones than you strictly need — a couple of faults shouldn't stop the party.

Music too quiet or distorted

If overall volume is low even with the headphone wheel maxed out, the input level from the music source is probably too low — turn up the volume on the phone, laptop or tablet feeding that channel. If the sound is distorted, the input is set too high, so turn it down a touch.
